A sweet, crispy, red pulp watermelon, with seeds or seedless, but weighing only 2-3 Kg: this is the aim which has been followed for a long time by Hazera Genetics, and which is today available on the Italian market , also owing to the presence and work carried out by Cois ’94 S.p.A..
Hazera Genetics ( the Israeli seed company well-known on a world level for the production and marketing of high added value seeds ) and Cois ’94 have always paid attention to the changeable market trends as well as to the different consumers’ needs . Now, they can offer an innovative product which meets the current requests and can give a new impulse to the watermelon sector as well as to the fruit and vegetable market in general.
What are more diffusely known as mini watermelons, baby watermelons or mignon watermelons, in reality, are but normal watermelons of reduced sizes and, therefore, completely similar to the traditional watermelons, from which they differ only for their sizes.
Our Mini Watermelons are the fruit of the adaptation of the research Hazera Genetics to the producers and markets’ requests. They are the results of accurate selections of varieties already present in nature, that crossed among themselves (therefore, having no recourse to the genetic engineering) have let to get watermelon hybrids which can produce small size fruits with excellent organoleptic features (taste, colour, etc.) and therefore practical, comfortable, not much cumbersome and fast to be consumed.
The main feature, common to the Mini Watermelons Cois ’94-Hazera Genetics, is their weight, which varies between 2 and 3,5 Kg depending on the plant distance. Instead, the colour of the skin is different , it may be medium green with dark green stripes type “Crimson sweet”, as it is the case of Extazy, or uniform dark green type “Sugar Baby”, as it is the case of Wander and of Liliput, or still with medium green thin stripes on a light green background type “Tiger”, as for Mielhart and Polimor, thus fully meeting the requests and needs of each market.

Another important distinguishing mark may be found in the presence or absence of seeds in the pulp. The lack of seeds is a character which is already common for several convenience fruits (such as clementines, bananas, grapes as Sultanina or such as a few eating varieties) that, however, are having wider and wider consents from consumers. Extazy, Wander and Mielhart are three varieties of Mini Watermelon that ,besides, having all the advantages of a fruit of reduced sizes ( easy to be carried, fast consumption, less space occupied, etc.), are also the best proposal for many consumers ( among whom several children), whom the presence of big seeds in the pulp causes not a little trouble. On the occasion of a few commercial and tasting trials it has been possible , in fact, to observe how the Mini seedless Watermelons are particularly enjoyable and in great demand ,above all by children, since they do not require the boring and sometimes embarrassing ( especially in public) operation of seed elimination.
The lack of the latter in the pulp, besides, lets it keep crispy and compact longer, thus favouring a longer holding and keeping of the fruit in post-harvesting .
Small sizes, red color pulp, compact, crispy, not fibrous, with high sugar degree and thin skin: these are the main features bringing a lot of people to consider the mini watermelon as the best part , the “ heart” of a traditional watermelon .
